Airtel is shutting Wynk. Will transition users to Apple.

As part of the strategic partnership with Apple, Airtel has announced shutting it’s music service Wynk.

The Wynk users will transition to Apple Music with preferential offers and pricing.

  • Wynk is estimated to have more than 100 mn users
    • This number is based on app downloads and hence may be grossly over stated.
    • Paid users out of actual users will be further small. For ease of reference, music streaming in India has an estimated audience of 185mn users of which only 7.5 mn (i.e., 4%) are currently paying.
  • Wynk transition to Apple music is not a standalone agreement. It’s part of a bigger partnership between Airtel and Apple, whereby Airtel users will be able to access Apple TV+ and Apple Music through premium wi-fi and postpaid plans in the coming months. Overtime, prepaid Airtel users will also be roped in.

Wynk has been a small non-core business for Airtel and hence the decision to tie-up with a more focused large platform like Apple.
